When children leave the foundation stage after their reception year they enter key stage one. This stage lasts two years (Y1 & Y2) and will finish at the end of year 2 when the children are all seven years old. In May of their final year children are assessed by their teachers in English, mathematics and science and by national tests in reading, writing and mathematics. Results are reported to parents with the child’s annual report. Children in Key stage one study all subjects of the national curriculum (see below) and religious education. English and mathematics are taught separately (see national literacy strategy (NLS) and national numeracy strategy (NNS) below) but most other subjects will be combined into “topics” to make learning more coherent.
